2009 CWU Turkey Bowl Championship

by Rob

SEATTLE, WA – At the historic grounds of Seattle’s Queen Anne Bowl, ligaments were stretched, ankles were turned, muscles were pulled and bragging rights were won.  The second annual CWU Turkey Bowl Championship was claimed by the agency’s Westside Team for a second straight year after posting a 7-4 victory over their bitter arch-rivals from the Eastside.  What looked like a sure route in the first half, turned into a nail-biting scenario for the Westside.

After cruising to a comfortable 4-1 lead, the Westside was denied touchdowns on multiple possessions by their Ally 24 officemates. Meanwhile, the Eastside offense found their rhythm, led by the ground game attack of last year’s MVP Katrina Stroh and first-year starter Lance Wei. Suddenly, a shell-shocked Westside team found themselves in a 4-4 tie.

“I got to give the Eastside credit,” said Westside All-American WR Matt Ralston.  “I thought we were looking at blow-out early on, but they really tightened up their defense, disguised their blitz packages and made big plays on offense to get back into the game.  But I was never worried.”

In the second half, the Westside put together a 15-play drive, thanks in part to several clutch receptions by Sydney Steele, and capped it off with a Mike Osotio TD catch to regain the lead 5-4.  On the ensuing possession, 2-year starter DeAndre Enrico intercepted a tipped John-James Richardson pass, placing the Westside deep in Eastside territory.  Five plays later, the Westside increased its lead to 6-4 on an end-around run by Turkey Bowl rookie Ernie Neumann.

This time, however, an Eastside comeback was not in the cards.  Leslie intercepted a tipped Richardson pass on the first play and took it back 20-yards for a pick-six and the walk-off win.

“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” said Leslie.  “I’m really proud of my Westside teammates. Today we showed a lot of heart in the face of adversity and proved why the trophy is ours for another year.  Now, do you know where I can get a beer?”
